The final punishment for sin is separation from God, and that is what Jesus suffered when the earth was suddenly plunged into darkness. Father God was now dealing with Him—not as a loving and merciful father with his child, but as an offended and righteous judge with an evildoer. In that moment God regarded Jesus as the greatest sinner beneath the sun and discharged on Him the whole weight of His wrath.
“…it was the Lord’s will to crush him…For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”
— Isaiah 53:10 and 12 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, thank You for suffering the judgment that was rightfully ours, making it possible for us to be reconciled to God. In Your holy name I pray, amen.
