Jesus came to the cross as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (Jn. 1:29). But while He hung on that cruel cross a terrible metamorphous took place. The sinless One was made to be sin for us (2 Cor. 5:21). And during the three hours of darkness, God did not deal with Him as a loving father deals with his son, rather God poured out on Him the full weight of His holy wrath, punishing Him for the entirety of humanity’s sin—past, present, and future.

“…he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

— Isaiah 53:12 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, thank you for being made sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in you. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
