Scholars suggest that Peter’s first epistle was written from Rome around AD 64. If that is the case, the Roman emperor Nero had already begun persecuting Christians. Soon he would behead the apostle Paul, and shortly thereafter he would order Peter’s own crucifixion. It’s easy to discern Peter’s purpose in writing. He wanted to comfort and encourage those believers who were already undergoing persecution. He also wanted to prepare them for what was about to come under the deranged hand of Nero.
“Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer….Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.”
— Revelation 2:10 (NIV)
Jesus, we pray for the persecuted church. Strengthen Your people. Give us grace to stand. In Your holy name I pray, amen.
