Death is very near now, and in the gloom the prince of darkness, the keeper of the dead, gloats as he waits for Jesus to die, never realizing that by dying Jesus will wrest the keys of death and hell from him. Summoning the last of His swiftly ebbing strength Jesus cried, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirt (Luke 23:46). His final words were not the dying gasp of a helpless victim, but the triumphant shout of a conquering king!
“[Jesus] shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”
— Hebrews 2:14-15
Lord Jesus deliver us from all fear of death. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
