The last years of the apostle Paul’s life were spent under house arrest in Rome or in a Roman cell awaiting execution. Upon on first glance, it would appear his incarceration was a devastating blow to the infant church, but it wasn’t. Under those trying circumstances he wrote much of the New Testament. He testifies, “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (Philippians 1:12). Through the eyes of faith, he saw beyond the limits of his circumstances to the providence of almighty God.

What about you? Can you see beyond the limits of your present circumstance? Can you see how God is going to use the hardships you are facing for eternal good?

“In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

— Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Father God, help us to trust You with our present situation. Amen.
