We can only image what the widow of Zarephath felt when Elijan told her to use the last of her oil and meal to make him a loaf of bread. Maybe she thought what does it matter we’re going to die anyway. Or maybe she dared to believe the word of the Lord, “‘There will always be flour and olive oil left in your containers until the time when the Lord sends rain and the crops grow again’” ( 1 Kings 17:14 NLT). Little did she know that she was about to receive a lesson in the economy of the Kingdom—what we keep never grows but what we give away never runs out!
“So she went away and did as Elijah had told her.”
— 1 Kings 17:15 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, give us the faith to believe what we give away never runs out. Amen.
