Barabbas, the man Pilate released instead of Jesus, represents every member of our fallen race. Was Barabbas guilty of sins against God and man? So are we. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Was Barabbas under a sentence of death? So are we. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). In the truest sense, the cross upon which Jesus died was intended not only for Barabbas, but for each of us. My sins fashioned that cross, as did yours, and it was there we should have died. But God had a better plan:
“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
