Jonathan understood that his friendship with David would cost him. He could see the handwriting on the wall. Better than anyone he understood his father’s jealousy and his rages. He realized it was only a matter of time before his father would turn on David so “…(he) made a covenant with David” (1 Samuel 18:3). This covenant—this commitment to the friendship at all costs—enabled their friendship to survive the jealousy of Jonathan’s father Saul, and his determined attempts to take David’s life.
“GOD will be the bond between me and you, and between my children and your children forever!”’”
–1 Samuel 20:42 (MSG)
Lord Jesus, help us count the cost and pay the price for true friendship. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
