According to Kierkegaard, the Danish theologian, “We don’t read the Bible it reads us.” And so it does, doesn’t it? Reads us like an open book. With uncanny accuracy it lays bare our deepest and most real selves. The temptation story is no longer just the narrative of Adam’s fall. Now it’s our story, for who among us hasn’t succumbed to the temptation to try to be like God. Isn’t that what’s at the root of all of our sins—this desperate desire to get our own way?

“Where do you think all these appalling wars and quarrels come from?..They come about because you want your own way, and fight for it…”

— James 4:1 (MSG)

Lord Jesus, forgive us for always wanting our own way. Help us to prefer others above ourselves. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
