No one can be absolutely certain that he serves God truly from a pure heart. Nonetheless, there are some questions we can ask ourselves that will help us examine our motives. None is more pointed than the one that asks: “Would I continue to do what I am doing if nobody saw and nobody knew? That is, would I do what I’m doing if there were nothing in it for me?

“All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighted by the Lord.”

— Proverbs 16:2 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, I confess I love applause. I like to be recognized and appreciated. Forgive me. Help me to serve you with a pure heart. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
