If ever there was a man who deserved God’s judgment it was conniving, deceitful Jacob. Yet when it seemed the conniver and deceiver was about to get what he had coming the Lord intervenes. Now comes the most wonderful part of this ancient story—Jacob is changed! He is not simply forgiven, but transformed. God says that he is no longer Jacob, but Israel; no longer a self-serving con man but a prince with God.
“‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.’”
— Genesis 32:28 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, cripple me if You must. Do whatever You have to do to deliver me from myself. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
