As Jacob neared Canaan he learned that Esau was coming to meet him with 400-armed men. In great fear and distress he prayed, “Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me” (Genesis 32:11). In desperation Jacob divided his wives and children into two groups and sent them off in different directions. Alone in the darkness he awaited his fate.
He deserved judgment but once again God was merciful. Instead of punishing him God blessed him and changed his name from Jacob (the deceiver) to Israel (a prince with God). More importantly God changed his character.
“Then (God) blessed him there.”
— Genesis 32:29 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, like Jacob I deserve judgment but I ask for mercy. Transform my character. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
