Before the Lord could bless Jacob he had to name himself, that is he had to admit that he was a liar and a con man. To “name” ourselves is to admit that we are not the persons we have pretended to be, at least not always. Sometimes we are hateful, selfish, angry, and manipulative. Only when we are willing to own our sinfulness will the Lord forgive us and transform us.

“‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.’”

–Genesis 32:28 (NIV)

Bless us, O Lord, and change us we pray. Make us truly like Jesus. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
