Sometimes the Lord has to put us between a rock and a hard place to break our stubborn will. I call this a “severe mercy” and that’s where Jacob found himself.
As he neared Canaan he learned that Esau was coming to meet him with 400-armed men. In desperation he divided his wives and children into two groups and sent them off in different directions. Alone in the darkness he awaited his fate.

In great fear and distress he prayed:

“Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me.”

–Genesis 32:11

Lord Jesus, break our stubborn self wills so that we may be conformed to Your very own image. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
