It’s a terrible thing to realize you are not the godly person others think you are. Even worse to realize you are not the godly person you thought you were. That’s what happened to David. He never could have imagined himself capable of adultery and murder. Then he seduced Bathsheba and arranged for her husband’s death. So how could David—a man after God’s own heart—do such a thing? Maybe a better question is “How can we make sure we don’t fall prey to something similar?”

“Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else.”

— 1 Corinthians 10:12 (MSG)

Lord Jesus, guard our hearts lest we succumb to temptation. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
