If you make the accumulation of wealth, or the pursuit of happiness, or any other personal benefit, the goal of your work, you will find only futility. Consider the experience of Solomon. He writes:

“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired…
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun”

— Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

That’s tragic, but, if you give yourself in service to God and others, God Himself will give you the desires of your heart. Fulfillment is not a goal. It is the consequence of a life lived in service to God and others!

Lord, help us to lay down our lives in loving service to You and others. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
