Rebel soldiers repeatedly raped Helen Roseveare, a medical missionary to the Belgium Congo. A few days later she was tried in a “people’s court.” The Rebels had gathered nearly 800 local men into the village square. At a given signal they were instructed to shout, “She’s a liar! She’s a liar!” They would then be asked, “What will we do with her?” The mandated response was, “Crucify her! Crucify her!”
When the moment of truth came the local villagers rushed forward shouting, “She’s ours. She’s ours.” They pushed the rebel shoulders out of the way and took her into their arms.
It was a turning point for the gospel. Helen said, “In that moment the black/white division disappeared. We’re all one in Christ Jesus.”
“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.”
— Philippians 1:12 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, use whatever happens to us to advance the gospel. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
