Misguided zeal undermines the work of the Lord in any number of ways. Not infrequently, it produces unrealistic expectations, which lead to devastating disappointment. When the wrong people do the wrong things for the wrong reasons you end up with an aberration, a monument to a man rather than a work that glorifies God. Let that person succumb to the excesses his zeal encourages, and no little damage is done to the body of Christ. Consider the example of King Saul. He went to Mt. Carmel and set up a monument in his own honor. As a result, the prophet pronounced judgement on him.

“Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you.”

— 1 Samuel 15:23

Lord Jesus, deliver us from misguided zeal. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
