The first person Elijah saw when he arrived in Zarephath was a poor widow. When he asked her for something to eat, she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I only have a handful of flour and a little oil. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die” (1 Kings 17:12). Elijah said to her:
“‘Don’t be afraid…the jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.” So she went away and did as Elijah had told her.”
— 1 Kings 17:13-15 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, give us faith to be obedient when You ask us to give all that we have. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
