The book of Acts is the only book of church history in the New Testament. It records five instances in which believers were baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; 8:14-19; 9:17-19; 10:44-47 and 19:6). Only three of those occasions describe what happened—visible tongues of fire, rushing winds, praise to God, prophecy, supernatural healing, and speaking in tongues. The only phenomena that occurred more than once was speaking in tongues and it is mentioned in each of the three instances. In the other two instances of Holy Spirit baptism speaking in tongues is inferred but not specifically mentioned.

“‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised…in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’”

— Acts 1:4-5 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, baptize us with the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
