Luke tells us that Jesus went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day as was His custom (see Luke 4:16). What, may I ask, could Jesus experience in the synagogue that He had not already experienced alone with God in prayer or as He pored over the Scriptures. What could a lay reader or a visiting rabbi possibly tell Him about God that He didn’t already know? The answers to these questions are readily obvious— nothing! Still, the more I think about it the more convinced I am that these are not the right questions. Public worship isn’t about getting but giving. In public worship we offer ourselves, not only to God in worship, but to each other in Spirit directed ministry.
“I love your sanctuary, Lord,
— Psalm 26:8 (NLT)
the place where your glorious presence dwells.”
Lord give us an undying love for Your house. Amen.
