The measure of Jonathan’s commitment to David was his willingness to give up the throne that was rightfully his. The measure of David’s commitment to Jonathan was his unwillingness to do anything to make the throne his own. They were both selfless in their commitment to each other, and thus their friendship has become the standard by which all friendships are judged.
