Because Jesus was fully human (Hebrews 2:17) His knowledge of the Holy Scriptures was learned rather than inherent. As the product of a devout Jewish home, He likely memorized the Scriptures from earliest childhood. Undoubtedly it was a discipline that He continued throughout His life. Like the Psalmist He could say, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). By living in the Word Jesus fortified His soul against the attack of the enemy. And when temptations came, He was prepared. Without fail He defended Himself with the Word.
Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

Lord, help us to defend ourselves with the Word. Amen.
