Jonathan could see the handwriting on the wall even if David couldn’t. Better than anyone he understood his father’s jealousy and his rages. He realized it was only a matter of time before his father would turn on David so “…Jonathan made a covenant with David” (1 Samuel 18:3). This covenant—this commitment to the friendship at all costs—enabled their friendship to survive the jealousy of Jonathan’s father Saul, and his determined attempts to take David’s life.
“Jonathan went to find David and encouraged him to stay strong in his faith in God. ‘Don’t be afraid…You are going to be the king of Israel…”
— 1 Samuel 23:16-17 (NLT)
Lord Jesus, help me be the kind of friend who is willing to seek his friend’s good over his own. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
