Elisha may not have realized what he was getting into when he set out to follow Elijah, but Elijah did. That’s why he said, “Go back. What have I done to you” (1 Kings 19:20)? But for Elisha there was no going back. His commitment reminds me of the first missionaries who went to Africa. Because the risk of dying on that dangerous continent was so great, they packed their belongings in caskets. They knew there was no turning back.

“I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may…complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”

— Acts 20:24 (NIV1984)

Lord Jesus help us to relinquish what we cannot keep in exchange for that which we cannot lose. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
