Steve had just returned from a long trip. He was tired, wanting to rest. The telephone rang. It was Hector. Would he meet him for coffee? Steve knew Hector needed a friend so he went, even though he didn’t want to. There in a secluded booth sat Hector—a lonely man, feeling little worth, bruised and hurt by life. Steve gave him the gift of his presence in Jesus’ name and slowly Hector began to hope again, to feel like his life might have meaning. Steve returned home exhausted in body, but exhilarated in my spirit.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

— Galatians 6:2

Lord Jesus, help us lay down our lives in loving service for others. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
