A friend and I had a painful misunderstanding and I found myself crying out to the Lord, “Why do I hurt so?” Slowly things began to come into focus. Although my friend and I were at odds this pain was caused by more than that. It was the Lord’s doing. He was chastening me, cleansing me, conforming me to the image of His dear Son. With that new understanding I was able to embrace my pain, not masochistically, but as submissive clay beneath the skillful fingers of the Master Potter. It still hurt but it was no longer pointless. It was pain with a purpose, redeemed by the tender hands of a loving Heavenly Father.

“‘Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand.’”

— Jeremiah 18:6 (NIV)

Lord I submit to You. Do Your holy work in me. Amen.
