William Barclay writes, “As a man judges, so he will be judged; as a man acted towards his fellow-men, so will God act upon him. It could not be otherwise.” He goes on to say, “The practice of mercy is that which unites us with God; the failure in mercy is that which separates us from God. And so the ending of the fifth Beatitude—’Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy’—is promise and warning at one and the same time.”

“There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.”

— James 2:13 (NLT)

Lord, forgive us our judgmental attitude and have mercy upon us. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
