I know a lady who refuses to read a book or watch a movie that makes her cry. Who can blame her? She has suffered unspeakably and shed more tears than most of us will shed in a lifetime. Still, I fear she is missing something precious—the comfort that comes to those who mourn—the comfort that comes from God Himself. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

If your heart is breaking, go ahead and grieve. Jesus grieves with you, and He will comfort you.

“When Jesus saw [Mary] weeping he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled [and he] wept. Then the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’”

— John 11:33, 35-36 (NIV 1984)

Lord comfort those of us who grieve. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
