I’ve always known the valley of the shadow of death was a dark and lonely place, but what I knew intellectually became a reality following my wife’s death a few months ago. Yet, even in my deepest grief I found comfort in the 23rd Psalm, particularly verses 4 and 5. The Lord promises to be with us and to prepare a table for us in the presence of our greatest enemy–death. Even in the lurking presence of death Jesus prepares a table of grace, a table of comfort, and a table of presence, therefore I will fear no evil.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me…Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.”

— Psalm 23:4-5 (KJV)

Lord be very near those who are grieving. Amen.
