Knowing when to step aside is one of the most difficult decisions a pastor will ever make. If he leaves too soon, neither the congregation nor his successor will be ready. If he stays too long, the church suffers, and a successful tenure will likely end on a sour note. Nothing blinds a person to God’s timing more than an out-of-control ego, so always guard your heart. When the time came for John the Baptist to step aside, he said:

“This is the assigned moment for [Jesus] to move into the center, while I slip off to the sidelines.”

— John 3:29–30 (MSG)

Lord Jesus, help us to move in Your perfect timing whether we are being promoted or moving to the sidelines. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
