The thing that makes betrayal so devastating is because it is always someone we love and trust who betrays us. For instance, King David’s family felt betrayed when his adulterous affair with Bathsheba came to light. While he survived his family did not. His betrayal shattered them and sent them spinning off into self-destructive behavior. Amnon raped his half-sister, Tamar. Absalom then murdered Amnon and ultimately led a coup to take the kingdom from his father David. Well, did the prophet say:

“Because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own. This is what the Lord says: “Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you.”

— 2 Samuel 12:10-11 (NIV 1984)

Lord heal both the betrayer and those who have been betrayed. Restore them we pray. Amen.
