On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Each of the fifty-six men who signed it knew they were committing an act of treason against the king—an act punishable by death. Nine of those men died of wounds or hardships during the Revolutionary war. Five were captured and imprisoned. Several lost wives, children or entire families. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. We owe them a great debt for without their sacrifices the United States of America would not exist.
“You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see.”
— Matthew 5:14 (TLB)
Lord Jesus, may we live lives worthy of the sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
