I realize that it is popular to begin the new year with high expectations, but realism compels me to begin with the words of Jesus. In John 16:33 (NIV 1984) He declared, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Christianity does not make us immune from life’s difficulties, but it does give us the strength to live with joy and meaning even under extreme duress. As we begin the new year let us say with the apostle Paul, “If God be for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31 KJV)?
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NIV)
Lord, as we begin this new year help us to take heart because You have overcome the world. Amen.
