Experience teaches me that forgiveness is more a process than a single event. Each time we experience the hurtful feelings we experienced initially we must choose to forgive again. And we must be specific in the things we forgive, naming them and releasing them. At times we may have to do this every day to keep from falling back into the trap of unforgiveness. The work of forgiving those who have betrayed us is complete when we can remember the hurtful things they did without experiencing the painful emotions those hurtful things initially produced.
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
— Colossians 3:13 (NIV)
Lord we confess that we need to keep forgiving. Help us. Amen.
