Overconfidence leads to prayerlessness as surely as summer follows spring. It could not be otherwise, for when a person feels self-sufficient, prayer seems unnecessary. He may mumble a few perfunctory words out of force of habit, but that hardly constitutes prayer. Months may go by, even years, but eventually he will be brought face to face with the barrenness of his soul. When temptation comes he will discover that his inner resources are sadly lacking making his defeat at the hands of the tempter a foregone conclusion.
“Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
— Luke 22:46 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, teach us to pray lest we fall into temptation. Help us for the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
