My purpose this morning is not to give you a history lesson regarding the Babylonian Empire and its demise. Rather I want to draw a parallel between the sins of Belshazzar and the sins of our own nation. At the time the Babylonian Empire was the greatest empire the world had ever known. Yet it fell in a single night. “That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two” (Daniel 5:30-31).
Belshazzar’s besetting sin was pride! “…you have not humbled yourself. For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven…you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!”
— Daniel 5:22-23
Lord, forgive us—as individuals and as a nation—for refusing to humble ourselves before You? In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
