In the novel “Quo Vadis?” there is a young Roman named Vinicius. At a secret gathering of Christians, he hears Peter preach and he becomes convinced that Jesus is the Son of God and he wants to become his disciple. Yet something holds him back. “He felt that, if he wished to follow Jesus he would have to place on a burning pile his old life and then fill himself with a life altogether different.”

Vinicius is right! That’s what it means to truly follow Christ. You must renounce all other loyalties, and live only for Jesus.

“If any one would come after me,” Jesus says, “‘he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

— Matthew 16:24

Lord Jesus, I surrender myself to You—all that I am, and all that I will ever be. Amen.
