Compassionate people know what hurts others, probably because they have been hurt themselves. But rather than becoming bitter, they make peace with their pain, make it an ally instead of an enemy. And now they have hands to help others, and feet to hasten to the poor and needy. They have eyes to see misery and want and ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. What about you? Have you made peace with your pain?

“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak…Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up.”

— Romans 15:1-2 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, fill us with compassion for others—the homeless man, or the misfit on the edge of the crowd, or the divorcee from down the street. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
