To resolve our differences, we often need to change our focus. Instead of focusing on the issue we need to focus on finding a solution. Some questions that I have found helpful in that regard include: 1) Help me to understand why you feel this way. 2) What can we do to resolve this issue? 3) What can I do to make things right? The first statement seeks clarity. The next two questions seek actions to resolve the issue. The next time you are in a heated discussion take a deep breathe, breath a prayer, and then ask, “What can we do to resolve this issue?”
“A gentle answer deflects anger,
— Proverbs 15:1 (NLT)
but harsh words make tempers flare.”
Lord Jesus, help us to focus on finding a solution rather than finding fault. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
