When we approach God with less than complete honesty, we become actors playing a role—what the Bible calls a hypocrite. As a consequence, we can have only the most superficial relationship with Him because the self we bring to the relationship is a false self. When we pretend to be something we are not, our spiritual life lacks vitality and our relationships are shallow and unfulfilling.

Lord Jesus, wrestle with me in the dark night of my dishonesty until, like Jacob of old, I tell You who I really am. Force me to confess and claim my identity, believing such honest confession births the intimacy that makes me new. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
