Many people say, “I think I have forgiven those who wronged me but how can I be sure?” If you can remember the hurtful incident without feeling the old emotions of hurt and anger then I think it is safe to say you have forgiven them. If, on the other hand, a chance encounter, or the memory of the incident, generate a rush of negative emotions you probably still have some work to do. Don’t be discouraged. Forgiving those who have hurt us is a process rather than a single event.
“Blessed are the merciful,
— Matthew 5:7 and 9 (NIV 1984)
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they will be called sons of God.”
Lord Jesus, replace our hurt and anger with Your unconditional love. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
