Regardless of what political party is in power, our responsibilities as Christ followers remain the same. The Scriptures command us to pray for our elected officials (1 Timothy 2:1-2), to act justly (Micah 6:8), to look after the orphans and widows (James 1:27), to make disciples (Matthew 28:19), to love God with our whole heart and our neighbor as our self (Matthew 22:38-39) and to keep ourselves from being polluted by the world (James 1:27). As Christians we have a dual citizenship. While our highest allegiance belongs to God, we also have civic responsibilities that we owe the country of our birth.
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s;
— Matthew 22:21
and unto God the things that are God’s.”
Lord Jesus, help us to live responsibly as citizens of this world and the next. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
