The ultimate purpose of friendship is not accountability but nurture. True friends hold each other accountable, to be sure. Yet if that becomes the primary function of the relationship, the friendship will not long survive. The bread that nourishes friendship is acceptance and communication, not accountability.
“And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God…. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘…You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you.’”
— 1 Samuel 23:16-17
Lord Jesus, teach us to be true friends who help each other find strength in the Lord. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
