In Gethsemane Jesus agonized in prayer begging the Father to take the cup from Him. In its dark dregs was the sin that was destroying those who were created in the Father’s image. There was rebellion there, and lust, and profane passions. Sickness and disease was there, as was death. Everything that God hates was in that cup, everything Jesus came to destroy. Because Jesus took that vile cup we can now take freely of the cup of salvation. Let us say with the Psalmists:
“I will lift up the cup of salvation
— Psalm 116:13 (NIV)
and call on the name of the LORD.”
Lord Jesus, thank you for drinking that vile cup so we can take the cup of salvation. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
