John Wesley had three basic rules for living. 1) Do no harm. 2) Do good at every opportunity. 3) Stay in love with God. I’m not sure any of us can consistently live up to his high ideals but we can chart our life by them in the same way the ancient mariners navigated by the stars. They knew they would never reach the stars but they were confident the stars would guide them to their destination. If we strive for Wesley’s ideals they will enable us to live a life pleasing to both God and man.

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you…Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”

— Proverbs 3:3-4 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, even as I strive to live a life pleasing to God let me trust only in Your finished work for my salvation. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
