On this day, 250 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Each of the fifty-six men who signed it knew they were committing an act of treason against the king—an act punishable by death. Still, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, they mutually pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honour. Nine died during the Revolutionary war. Five were captured and imprisoned. Several lost wives, children or entire families. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one went back on his pledged word. Today we are celebrating the 250th birthday of the nation they sacrificed so much to create.

“You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see.”

— Matthew 5:14 (TLB)

Lord Jesus, help us to live lives worthy of the price the founding fathers paid for our country and our freedom. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
