When you think of the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4) the first thing that comes to mind is probably physical death. But in a broader sense the Psalmist is alluding to more than just physical death. He is thinking of every difficult experience we face in life. Three come quickly to my mind. 1) The valley of despair; that place where our dreams die. 2) The valley of failure; that place where our self-image dies. 3) The valley of suffering; that place where our faith is tried.

Lord Jesus, be very near to those who are walking through dark places. Grant them strength for today and hope for tomorrow. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
