In the 1840’s two wagon trains set out for the gold fields of California. One of the wagon masters drove his wagon train seven days a week; week after week. The other wagon master stopped every seventh day for rest and worship. To almost everyone’s amazement his wagon train reached California first.
Consider the explorers who hired some African guides. For six days the guides went full speed ahead. On the seventh day the explorers discovered their guides resting. They ordered them to move out. The guides refused. “Every seventh day we stop,” they explained, “so our spirits can catch up to our bodies.”
Then there’s the old miner who said, “I bring my mules out of the mine one day out of seven to keep them from going blind.”
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…”
— Exodus 20:8-10 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, teach us to practice the Sabbath principle so our spirits can catch up with our weary bodies. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
