Aron Ralston was mountain climbing alone in a remote area of southeastern Utah when he suffered a freak accident. While working his way through a narrow opening, he put his right hand on a nearby boulder to brace himself. Suddenly the huge boulder shifted, trapping his hand. Try as he might he could neither move the boulder nor wrest his hand free. After four days without food or water and with no hope of being rescued he knew what he had to do. Steeling his mind, he positioned the tourniquet and picked up his pocketknife. He had no other choice. It was his arm or his life.

“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.”

— Matthew 18:8 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, give us the courage to cut off all contact with those things that war against our souls. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
